Black Woman Sovereignty
Black woman sovereignty is a woman who keeps a line of sea salt by her front door as a protective barrier. A border no one could cross. Her crown of box braids, a fortress unto itself, mirrored this salt line. Each box braid parting represented a fallen ancestral hero, and her long braids formed an impervious force field that filtered out the noise of European beauty standards.
She stood at the door of her castle declaring defiance against the myriad of the world’s encroachments. Her castle consisted of shea butter, ’90s R&B and perfecting her crafts, whilst being drenched with quiet grace and the beautiful aroma of ackee and saltfish in her small Dutch pot on her stove that suffused the room as heritage no one could dilute.
A place in which the outside world’s laws, prejudice, racism, hierarchy and deplorable societal systems ceased to exist.
